Guitarists spend most of their time on stage playing rhythm guitar. Our role in most band settings, across virtually every genre, is establishing the groove of the songs we’re playing with the drummer and bass player. This is especially true with American roots music like blues, soul, funk, rock and even jazz.

Great jazz rhythm guitar players have command navigating all over the fretboard, have a solid understanding of the harmonic material for the underlying changes, and possess a wide range of tasteful rhythmic approaches -- all of which require a never-ending process of learning, practice and perennial growth.

Like any other language, the language of the blues relies on a player’s command of its vocabulary coupled with their ability to express themselves creatively with that vocabulary. Stringing blues licks together and running pentatonic scales up and down over the changes may get you up and running quickly but that’s only the first step of your learning journey as a blues guitarist.

All of the great jazz guitarists can improvise melodically with single note lines, but they also have great command of improvising melodically with chord voicings to create more harmonic interest and better emphasize the changes.

Field recorders in hand, musicians, producers, and sound artists Krishna Jhaveri and Sanaya Ardeshir (aka Sandunes) spent 30 days traveling through South India to capture the land’s sounds. From South Goa through Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, they drove through farms, plantations, and forests in search of sonic signatures of the remaining wild spaces they could access.
