When the Hammond* was introduced to churches as an affordable option to the classic pipe organ, little did the founding company know of the fact that it would come to fundamentally transform gospel music to the core. Needless to say, today the inimitable sound and unique expression of this iconic instrument is synonymous with gospel, whether it be for service, traditional music or the many modern and genre-transcending iterations that are topping the charts today.

Merging edgy beats and cutting edge production techniques with evocative soundscapes and hypnotic hooks, ambient pop is an amalgam of electronic music styles unlike no other. In this MIDI pack for EZkeys, we explore both ends of this multi-textured and borderless genre.

With accessible vocal and keyboard hooks front and center, the tropical house genre has managed to struck a chord that's cut through to the very core of the mainstream – way beyond the inner circle of the EDM scene. Artists like The Chainsmokers, Kygo, Diplo, Becky Hill and numerous others have been tearing up global charts, become rotation staples in all thinkable medias and been topping major festival rosters around the globe for years now.

When artists like Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and many more hit the scene some 70 years ago with their new, vocal-driven collage of gospel, jazz and blues, they made an indelible mark on music history. Since then, classic soul has produced more iconic artists and timeless hits than arguably any other genre to this day.

Fusing classic soul with funk, jazz, fusion, hip-hop, pop and electronic, soul of today is a patchwork of styles where no rules apply other than those that have been given since day one: great melodic and rhythmic foundations. However, seeing as the word “modern” implies a fleeing snapshot of the exact moment of now, this collection of EZkeys MIDI rather sets out to capture the evolution of post-classic soul from the late 1990s through to today. Expect the lush and velvety ballads reminiscent of the early pre-millennium neo-soul era all the way through the funky, beat-driven and electronic amalgams that followed.

Shimmering in blinding neon pastels, the ’80s was an era when technology forced its way to the forefront and got its first permanent foothold in mainstream music culture. It was a time when acoustic and electronic merged to form all-together new sounds, musical expressions and even genres. In all of this, the bass of course played a tremendous part – not least in the shape of the surging use of the synth filling its traditional role.
