Thousands of hit songs, across almost every style of popular music, use the same handful of chord progressions. So, what makes those songs so distinctive from one another? Melody, lyrics, and production values are all very important, of course, but its rhythm, chord voicings, and right-hand techniques that set the groove and distinguishes one song from another using the very same chord progression.

In this series we are going to explore creative ways of using the numbers π and φ as foundation for aesthetically pleasing sounds. Numbers π (3,14) and φ (1,618) are irrational numbers and they are defined by geometric construction. Both numbers express ratios used in many forms of science and art. Phi appears in, the proportions of the human body and other animals, plants, DNA, the solar system, art and architecture, population growth, the stock market, the Bible and in theology and music. Musical frequencies are based on Fibonacci ratios.

Welcome to the MUSIC THEORY FOR ELECTRONIC MUSIC Guide - Part 5!I like to think of this class as the "antidote for writers-block." What we are going to do in this class is look closely at form and structure. That means we will be spending time diving into the whole track, and it looking at how it flows between sections, why it flows between sections, and how we can make that happen in our own tracks. So dust off some of those old sessions that you've been able to finish because this class is going to give you the tools you need to get those done.

To top it all off, Pharaoh also comes with an enrollment into a full start to finish drum programming course! It's not enough to just have the sounds, having deep domain knowledge on the ins and outs of writing drums is essential.

In this class we are going to focus on turning chord progressions into an expressive element of the track, and not just "blocks" of harmony. We will add some new chords, look at passing tones and a few kinds of suspensions, and a kind of "out of the box" chord progression called a Sequence. This will make writing chords a whole lot easier!
