I recently worked on building another sequencer, adding to my extensive experience with step sequencers over the years. Songbird is a MaxForLive audio instrument. It features a simulation of a flock of birds, each bird having its own model of a syrinx (a bird vocal organ) as well as a model of a simple birdbrain that controls the syrinx to create different syllables. Each bird's position, speed, angle, etc in the flock can be mapped to various parameters as modulation sources. This device yields anything from textures, drones, rhythms, harsh/haunting/noisy/pretty tones, generative soundscapes, odd melodies, and of course different sounding bird calls!

Samsara is a granular looping max for live device that allows for individual control of each grain (or voice). This means that you can set these parameters for each grain individually: start position, grain size, pitch, filter center, short delay time, panning and gain. Samsara is an audio effect and so you can record incoming audio into the buffer to apply the granular looping on. There are several different record modes which makes Samsara useful for live performance looping as well.

I crafted a tutorial on how to use an envelope follower in Bitwig Studio to modulate the frequencies of a filter on a bass track using the amplitude of drums on a drum bus. In the 90s he supplied several sound sets for the Microwave 1, which had then just seen the light of day. His “Techno” and “Signature” cards inspired many users and can therefore be heard on countless productions of the 90s.
