Gqom is a South African dance music genre that originated in the Durban townships in the early 2010s. "Gqom" is an onomatopoeia from the Zulu language and is meant to represent the sound of a drum pronounced with an alveolar click followed by a guttural "om". The Casio MT-70 is an electronic keyboard from 1984. What makes it unique is that, unlike most other Casio keyboards, its sounds are generated by adding together sine waves, an approach often called additive synthesis. As a result, this keyboard is particularly good at producing mellow organ and flute tones.

This old piano has seen a lot of use, and while it’s been tuned a few times, it still carries that unique, slightly out-of-tune charm. I’ve recorded every note on it, capturing both a clean version and one with a little extra character by running it through a cassette tape.
