Join Studio One wiz Gary Hiebner for an in-depth video tutorial series on advanced mixing concepts in Studio One. If you're familiar with the basics but feel as though your mixes are still lacking that certain something and/or you aren't fully taking advantage of Studio One's flexibility and processing capabilities, this is the Studio One course for you! You'll learn techniques like parallel processing, split-band processing, clip editing, and adding width to your mix, to name a few. By the end of this Studio One mixing course, you'll have a plethora of new skills and tricks at your disposal for your next mix project. These mixing videos are designed for Studio One users familiar with the basics of routing and mixing.
Gary begins by showing you how to get around CPU resource issues by rendering tracks to audio, which effectively frees up any processing power that was used by the track's plugins. Then you'll see how to export stems from a multi-output instrument, such as a virtual drum instrument. This is followed by a look at working with similar instruments using folders and buses, which provides better organization as well as bus processing possibilities.
Next, you'll learn how to properly gain stage your tracks so that you have plenty of headroom in your session and are operating within the DAW's optimal parameters. Gary demonstrates how to use level meters and VCA faders to help accomplish this. Then you'll learn about using dynamic processing on the main output, which is a very common way of helping to glue the sound of the instruments together.
There's plenty more to come, such as multiple EQs on one track (one for taming resonances and another for color and shape the sound), multi-stage compression (one for taming peaks and one for more general dynamic control), parallel processing (blending a dry signal with a heavily processed one), split-band processing (using the Splitter to separate a signal into different frequency bands to process each differently), clip-based editing vs automation (when to use which), adding width (using a pitch shifter), dynamic EQ (vs normal EQ), using saturation (for increased energy), and more!
Studio One is a deep program with loads of options and capabilities. This mixing course will help improve your workflow and push your mixes to the next sonic level fast! By implementing the techniques learned here, you'll notice the difference in your very next song, and, more importantly, so will everyone else. Check out the individual Studio One video tutorial descriptions for more information on all the tips and ideas covered in this Presonus course and for ideas on how these concepts will transform your recordings.
