SkillShare Songwriting from scratch How to write an EDM melody

This is not a video about production! Specifically, this is aimed at you if you are comfortable at creating beats and producing but not sure how the music side of things works? This course uses examples from the EDM genre, although the techniques discussed here can be used to produce any music in a pop style. The course will make use of Logic Pro X on an apple mac, but there is no reason that you can’t reproduce anything I do and show you here on another comparable DAW, on any computer.

Project Description

Now that you have watched the video and hopefully have a better idea about how harmony and melody go together to create a great tune! I have created a MIDI file which includes three chords and is two bars long. The three chords are;

(1) D minor (2) Bb Major and (3) F Major. The notes that make up these three chords are ;

D minor - D, F, A

Bb Major - Bb, D, F

F Major - F, A, C

In bar 1, begin to create your melody using the notes from D minor and Bb Major

In bar 2, create your melody using the notes from F major

Please refer back to the 'Example MIDI track' video for pointers and tips for writing your own EDM melody! Good luck! I look forward to hearing what you create!!!
