Already back in the early 1990s, his limitless playing introduced a sound that managed to forge trudging brutality with a nuance reminiscing that of a jazz or fusion drummer – a style where the drums were allowed to paint with all-new colors and much broader brushes than what was customary in death metal up until then.

A MODERN MERGE.EZkeys MIDI that merges hip-hop with that unmistakable soul-like flair of R&B. In today’s music landscape, the lines between genres keep getting more and more smudged – especially so when it comes to the likes of hip-hop and R&B. Collaborations, guest appearances, performing producers and DJs – the field is wide open for players on both sides of the ‘fence’ to explore and evolve. A hip-hop track can include sung verses and big vocal choruses while an R&B song can build predominantly on rap. No given set of rules applies, and like in all creative contexts, with a blank slate comes borderless creation, new ideas and open minds.

The horns may be the most easily identifiable ingredient in the often busy sonic landscape of a traditional big band arrangement, but the unsung hero of the melodic rhythm section is undoubtedly the piano. This EZkeys MIDI pack was inspired by the timeless musical legacy left by the likes of Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and the many other players and band leaders who immortalized the piano as an unquestionable component in the big band format. From the frail harmonics of a subtly struck open chord at the top of the octaves to the thunderous impact of a percussive pattern at the low bass range, the piano has a voice like no other. It literally covers the entire dynamic and expressive scope – melody, harmony and rhythm. This collection of EZkeys MIDI sets out to do just that: give you a broad palette of big band-inspired song structures across all tempos, feels and styles that apply.

GROOVE-APPROVED.Drum grooves, fills, breaks and pick-ups inspired by the iconic drummers of the big band era. The big band and swing era of the early 20th century wasn’t only significant because it introduced jazz music on a major scale to the general public, but for several other reasons as well. First, it very much defined what we still refer to as a ‘drum kit.’ Before the jazz age, drum sets were comprised of pretty random pieces of percussion. The big band format actually in many ways standardized the kick/snare/hi-hat/tom-tom format. Second, likely no other genre has produced more timeless drum icons. Still today, we marvel at the technicality, finesse and almost weightless facility of “Papa” Jo Jones, Gene Krupa, Chick Webb, Buddy Rich and many more. The ripples of their propulsive swing have yet to ebb away – in some cases a century later. Third, it instituted the drummer as a soloist, cemented the instrument as the pivot point of the rhythm section and attributed a showmanship, a playfulness and an element of storytelling to the art of playing drums that had yet to be seen. All in all, this era was a turning point for drums on a whole and the very art of playing them in front of an audience.
