N-SILK is a spectral resonance suppressor with a dynamic threshold + spectral filter, giving you fast and easy control over problematic frequencies and spectral sidechain masking/ducking.
N-SILK tries to simplify the process of dynamic resonance suppression by having a dynamic threshold, utilizing controllable self multiplication of frequencies and a threshold based on pink noise.
N-SILK also comes with the spectrum smoothing known from spec comp, which smoothes out the details while keeping the fundamentals consistent.
You can also use external sidechain signals to do frequency masking / ducking, which it is surprisingly good at!
SILKThe main SILK dial adjusts the amount of resonance suppression.
N-SILK applies frequency-self multiplication to differenciate loud frequencies from quiet ones. The higher the SILK amount, the more of the quieter frequencies will be included in the phase cancellation signal, which N-SILK uses to subtract frequencies from a dry signal
THE SPECTRUM GRAPHN-SILK comes with a detailed spectrum graph and a SPECTRAL FILTER, which you can control with the two available nodes, one of which pops up when hovering over it.
With how N-SILK handles the dynamic threshold based on pink noise, N-SILK doesn't require boosting of frequencies to suppress them further. Contrary to other resonance suppressor effects, N-SILK accounts for frequencies that naturally exceed the pink noise slope, meaning that any additional biased suppression should rather be done with a dynamic eq. You can get some bias by adjusting the SLOPE of the filter and its' position if necessary.
The main NODE adjusts the center frequency and width of the spectral filter. The node above it adjusts the SLOPE of the filter.
You can change the spectrum render style with the spectrum icon.
SPECTRAL SMOOTHING AND RELEASEN-SILK creates a phase inverted signal based on an analysis signal. This analysis signal can be averaged out across the spectrum and decayed over time, which further helps shape the resonance suppression to your needs.
SMOOTH helps reduce noisy sounding suppression at a cost of accuracy on the very tiny details.
RELEASE adds a decay to the analysis signal, which effectively supresses frequencies past their original length. This is especially useful to reduce noisy suppression and for sidechain ducking.
SIDECHAIN AND DELTAN-SILK allows for an external sidechain signal to be used as the analysis signal, which opens up a wide array of use cases. This can range from spectral masking for mixing purposes to spectral sidechain ducking to morphing.
Enable sidechain mode by clicking the EXT button.
N-SILK also allows you to listen to the phase inverted signal for transparency, but this can also be used for creative purposes.
Enable DELTA mode by clicking the DELTA button.
And that's pretty much it! You can also DAW automate Silk, Smooth and Release for even more control! Have fun!
