The Mbira pronounced "Mmm - Beer - ahhh" is a 29 key thumb piano from Zimbabwe and Mozambique made with metal tongs fastened onto a soundboard. The sound of this instrument is said to have mystical properties that are “pleasing” to the spirits. While the Mbira is mostly used in traditional ceremonies it is also very popular in African pop music and is commonly played in bands throughout South Eastern Africa. No one can say exactly how or when the Mbira came to be but its mythology is vast and includes stories of it being given to people by mermaids or angels.

Experimental electronic artist Stephen (aka Stephen Swartz) explores a deeply layered resonance propelled by societal issues and personal perception of modern culture. In 2016, the LA-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist released his debut LP, Sincerely that garnered critical praise from outlets such as TIME, Billboard, VICE, FADER, and Independent. This set things in motion for Stephen's wide-ranging vision for global and political change through a penchant for numerous genres, thematic narratives, and a profound intimacy often absent within modern electronic music.

For this pack, we teamed up with the multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and music producer, Stuart Bogie. He recorded tenor, alto, and baritone sax, as well as flute at his studio in Brooklyn, NY. With the intention of establishing a sound reminiscent of classic 1970s soul, these ideas were layered with Rhodes, Wurlitzer, piano, guitar, bass, and a vintage Arp Odyssey.

MUTED GUITARS follows the same electroacoustic principles of The Muted Seiler comprising three different guitars, powerful sound design tools and a unique Arpeggiator. “Muted Guitars” is a Kontakt based library which was recorded in one of the small recording rooms within the Sofia Session Studio. It has one summed microphone position (capturing the Organic muted/plucked sound of three different guitars), which was later processed to add two more “microphone” positions (Low FX and High FX) enabling a number of sound-shaping possibilities.
