These were the famous sentiments of Dr. Henry Jekyll - the main character in Robert Louis Stevenson’s late 19th century novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This classic novel beautifully interplays the disputation and dissonance of the good and evil natures that exist inside the human psyche. This dualism of human personalities is the chief inspiration behind Paul Mabury’s sequel That Sound Icon library, Jekyll & Hyde. Don't be fooled by it. As it relates to sound design, Francesco is as pure as they come. He began producing music at the age of 14 and spent his subsequent years learning the nuances of electronic sound and film scoring at the Conservatory in Italy. Not long into his musical journey, he started to understand that in order to create he needed to listen. This set him on a path of self-discovery - listening to what was around him and paying attention to what was in front of him. He soon realized anything could be a musical instrument if he listened well. From here, he began designing sounds from everyday household objects. A printer, a bike, a drill, a water bottle, a spray can, an iPhone, a lamp, a banana ... yes, a banana. The world around him opened up and everything was at play. Francesco maintains that by starting with the most basic objects you already possess, your songs (and the process by which you make them) become instantly more unpredictable.

Drummer, Darren King can have that influence on you. He is recognized as one of the most passionate and talented drummers in music and the only thing more brilliant than his playing is his unique approach to capturing his sound. We spent days in the lab with Darren pulling together one of the coolest and most beloved samples libraries in our catalog. Unpolished and filthy in the best way possible, Darren’s drums are processed and pushed hard through API pre amps, various compressors, and Studer and Teac tape heads. This library offers a variety of kicks, snares, toms, and cymbals - all in greatly detailed multi-velocity samples. These drums are quite a bit more colorful - which ultimately makes them more serviceable and more beneficial. Abstract expressionist painter, Jackson Pollock once said, “Every good artist paints what he is.” Neon is a direct reflection of its designer, Chris Zane. Albums like ‘Matter’ and ‘When the Night’ by Indie Rock legends, St. Lucia demonstrate Chris’s unique producing and mixing style. Neon is full of drums with beautiful ironies and great stories. For example, some of the drums are old but explosive. Some of them are tight and dead without being meek or quiet. Put your hand over your chest. You feel that? You might think that's the natural beat of your heart receiving blood from your body and pumping it back into your lungs. In one sense, that's what happening - if not, you should stop reading this and seek professional medical attention immediately.

Nothing takes a nice groove and gives it depth like good percussion. So why then are good percussion samples and loops so hard to come by? Most of the existing percussion sample libraries only highlight a few instruments and they all sound pretty lifeless.

After 2 hours at 47,000 feet above ground ... we touched down early in the evening. As the door to the hangar slid open, there were hugs and hi-fives. We were actually about to do it. What started as a hypothetical "what if" discussion at a team meeting was now as real as the Dassault Falcon that landed us here. We were kids on Christmas morning. We took our time walking around this enormous space, marveling at our individual inferiority as we stood in the abdomen of a room large enough for not one ... not two ... but yes, three airplanes. With a random series of claps and finger snaps, we tested and familiarized ourselves with the room. We knew we'd either dance or wrestle with this room for the next 24 hours. Natural reverb and delay like you wouldn't believe, but was it too noisy? Was the tail too long? Would the noise bleed into our samples and create an even more painstaking process than drum sampling already is? There were so many unanswered questions, but the most pressing was obviously, "What the hell is this going to sound like on the other side of the monitors?" We unloaded the plane and set up a 26" kick, a couple old Rogers toms, a black beauty snare, a couple Constantinoples, some mics, a mini rack, and any other gear we managed to fit onto the plane. Once everything was set up, Paul hit the first snare and we all screamed (not actual words ... mostly expletives and onomatopoeia). With wings behind us (literally), mountains beside us, and a sunset before us, we played drums deep into the night. We came away with a sound you won't believe until you hear it. As the opening act for 2018, we'd like to introduce you to a collection of drum samples unlike any you've ever heard ... Hangar.
