I think we should be able to do passable “impressions” of our composing contemporaries. Doing so reveals our understanding (or lack thereof) of the colors and styles we’re surrounded by – which naturally influence our own work!

The Skiddaw Stones are probably the most unusual and certainly the oldest instrument that Soniccouture has sampled. A Lithophone (litho=stone, phone=voice) dating from 1840, the Skiddaw Stones are composed of 61 tuned and shaped rocks made from the rare hornfels stone, found in Cumbria, England.

The hulusi or cucurbit flute is a free reed wind instrument from China. It is held
vertically and has three bamboo pipes which pass through a gourd wind chest;
the center pipe has finger holes and the outer two are typically drone pipes. It is
not uncommon for a hulusi to have only one drone pipe while the second outer
pipe is merely ornamental. The drone pipe has a finger hole, which allows it to be
stopped. Advanced configurations have keyed finger holes similar to a clarinet or
oboe, which can greatly extend the range of the hulusi to several octaves.

There is a world of interesting instruments, tonalities, colors, and harmonies out there which we can use in our work. Rather than just dropping a duduk on top of some strings, lets explore deeper the techniques and effectiveness of truly integrating these gems within our Western framework. When it’s done right, it’s both exotic and familiar, and extremely effective!
